Richard May is a practicing visual artist living and working in the south of the UK.  His current work is abstract, painted in either oil or acrylic on a variety of surfaces (including canvas and wood) of various sizes.   His work focuses on perceptions of emotion and reaction to reality.  Richard studied Fine Art in Portsmouth, UK and has spent time researching and analysing the work of contemporary artists, alongside a broader art history.

 Artist Statement

In recent work, I strive to capture my experience of landscapes, interiors and specific events within them.  Each image is a process of moving away from a literal interpretation, taking elements of form and colour and then using these as a musician uses sound to create a memory or impression of the original scene or narrative.  I use colour and shape to create a static song about things felt and seen.  I work in a variety of media – chiefly oil and acrylic; I push against the limitations of each medium, challenging and stretching my practice, to keep each image fresh and elastic.  It is my aim to present open, fluid images to viewers, allowing them access to both process and meaning.
